What Are SMRs and Why Anglesey? IET Event to Feature Great British Energy – Nuclear

Posted: 21 August 2026

Hear from Danny Clark, Head of Design Management at Great British Energy – Nuclear SMR Project.

The IET Nuclear TN in collaboration with IET Merseyside and Western Cheshire and the Northern Nuclear Alliance are hosting a Lecture on Small Modular Reactors at the EngineRooms Birchwood on the 24th September 6:30-8:30pm.

Event

Great British Energy – Nuclear, with their partner Rolls Royce SMR, are moving through the design phases of the project which will build the first ever SMRs in the UK, in Anglesey. This site, recently named Gwyndod, close to the old, decommissioned Reactor site of Wylfa, will be the ‘First of a Kind’ Small Modular Reactor designed and built in the UK.

Danny will talk through what SMRs are, why they have been chosen and the differences between Gigawatt Nuclear Reactors and SMRs. Why Anglesey was chosen as the first site and the difficulties of grid connection in a remote location.  He will also explain what would make an ideal location for a SMR.
