IDN is delighted to announce BCNS as latest industry partners

Inclusion and Diversity in Nuclear (IDN) is delighted to announce Bechtel Cavendish
Nuclear Solutions (BCNS) as the latest of our industry partners for 2021.
Since 2019, co-founders Monica Mwanje of MM Creative Solutions and Callum
Thomas of Thomas Thor have mainly funded IDN to engage the nuclear industry in
promoting a more inclusive environment, through provision of resources,
information and events.
Recent successes for IDN include our 2020 conference which, despite the pandemic,
drew an unprecedented online audience of over 500, with a global reach.
We’re aiming for bigger and better things for 2021 and beyond – including our 2021
Conference on 15th July – and to do that, we made a call for support from our
colleagues in the industry.
Quote from BCNS General Manager, Clive Billiald: “We are extremely excited to be
supporting I&D in Nuclear and the vital work they are doing. We all recognise our
responsibility to make our Nuclear Industry a more diverse and thriving environment,
and we know that diverse people, viewpoints and experiences all contribute directly
to better project outcomes. We look forward to what we can learn from and
contribute to this important community, and to embedding this learning in our wider
organisations.”
Quote from IDN co-founders: “We are delighted that BCNS is supporting our work.
Their global reach will be invaluable in helping us to share our work and facilitate
change towards a truly inclusive and equitable nuclear industry. We look forward to
working together with BCNS and other industry partners as we continue our vision.”

ABOUT BECHTEL CAVENDISH NUCLEAR SOLUTIONS (BCNS)
Bechtel Cavendish Nuclear Solutions (BCNS) are an international joint venture
between Bechtel, a global engineering, construction, and project management
company, and Cavendish Nuclear (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Babcock
International Group).
Known as one of the four most hazardous buildings in Western Europe, the Sellafield
Pile Fuel Cladding Silo (PFCS) was commissioned in 1952 to safely store radioactive
cladding – pieces of metal tubes used for uranium fuel rods in some of the UK’s
earliest nuclear reactors. Since 2012 the UK government has partnered with Bechtel
Cavendish Nuclear Solutions to deliver a system that will allow Sellafield to retrieve
the decades-old waste, package it safely, and dispose of it permanently.

Recently the team has been awarded a two-year contract extension to continue new
contract scope of works. Including procurement, manufacture, preparation,
installation, and commissioning of additional equipment to allow Sellafield to
retrieve waste from the remaining five silo compartments, once the first
compartment has been emptied and extension and growth of off-site testing
facilities, to develop future systems for use on the retrievals plant.
Additional to this has been a formalised approach to Social Impact.
