Atkins partnership with URENCO to deliver UK nuclear programme

Atkins is set to deliver URENCO’s Capital Investment Programme – establishing its place as a Strategic Partner for all areas of URENCO’s project and programme delivery. A Capital Investment Programme involves investing in plant and site upgrades, as well as new facilities. Services provided by Atkins will include the provision of infrastructure and project management services to URENCO, a key player within the field of nuclear fuel supply chain, resulting in the sustainable generation of electricity for UK consumers.

Chris Ball, managing director of nuclear at Atkins, commented: “Having worked closely with URENCO for the last two years under the initial framework for this programme, we have established an excellent working relationship locally. We are pleased to be the strategic partner to URENCO for this hugely important long-term programme of activity.

“The scope of this work could see our URENCO-dedicated team double in size from 30 to 60 within the next 12 months. The close working relationships between our teams locally is an important component to our new contract as not only are we delivering the engineering and design side of things, but also helping URENCO establish systems and procedures for the ongoing management of project delivery and operations.”

Brian Robinson, head of technical services, URENCO commented: “Atkins already has proven technical and project management expertise in the nuclear arena but their ability to work with URENCO as truly collaborative partners for the long term is what is most important to us with a programme of this scale.”

URENCO fulfils its customers’ requirements through its four operational nuclear enrichment plants in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and the US.
